How to connect Google Analytics (GA4)

Add the GA4 measurement ID and the player sends video start, progress, completion and the checkout click.

Like the Meta Pixel, Google Analytics is set up on the VSL Max account and applies to every video, including those already published. The player sends events from your sales page, in the viewer's browser.

Before you start

  • You need the GA4 measurement ID. In Google Analytics it is under Admin › Data streams and starts with G-. The old UA- ID doesn't work.
  • The video must be on the page through the script embed. In the iframe the player sends no events.
  • Only admins can add, pause or remove IDs.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings › Integrations.
  2. On the Google Analytics card, click Connect.
  3. Under Add measurement ID, paste the ID (for example G-ABC123XYZ). The name is optional.
  4. Click Add.

Published videos start sending to that ID without changing the embed code.

Events the player sends

  • video_start: when the person actually starts watching, outside the muted autoplay preview.
  • video_progress: at 10, 25, 50, 75 and 90% of the real time watched, with the video_percent parameter.
  • video_complete: when the video ends.
  • begin_checkout: when the person clicks a link that leads to the checkout of the conversion linked to the video.

Every event carries video_id, video_title, video_duration, video_current_time and video_provider set to vslmax. Each milestone fires once per page load.

The player does not send page_view. If your page already has gtag, it reuses it and does not configure the same ID twice. If not, the Google script is only loaded on the first event, after the first play.

To use the parameters in reports (for example, to break down by video_title), register them as custom dimensions in GA4.

How to check in GA4

  1. Open your sales page and play the video.
  2. In GA4, open the Realtime report or DebugView.
  3. video_start shows up right after the play. video_progress events arrive as the video moves on.

Limits and caveats

  • Up to 3 measurement IDs per account, with no duplicates.
  • GA4 numbers won't match VSL Max analytics exactly: ad blockers, cookie consent and Google's session rules change the count. For video performance, the reference is the dashboard analytics. See Results metrics.
