How to connect the Meta Pixel

Add the pixel once to your account and the player sends Meta the start of the pitch, how much was watched and the checkout click.

In VSL Max the Meta Pixel belongs to the account, not to a video. You add the ID once and every video starts sending events to it, including the ones already published. You don't need to change the embed code on your page.

The player fires the events in the viewer's browser, inside your sales page. That is what lets Meta tie the event to the same session as the ad.

Before you start

  • You need the pixel ID. It is in Meta Events Manager, under Data sources, and contains only digits (10 to 20).
  • The video must be on the page through the script embed. With the iframe embed the player does not fire the pixel, because the event would carry the player's address instead of your page's.
  • Only account admins can add, pause or remove pixels.

Step by step

  1. In the dashboard, open Settings › Integrations.
  2. On the Meta Pixel card, click Connect (or Manage if a pixel is already there).
  3. Under Add pixel, paste the pixel ID. The name is optional and only helps you recognize the pixel in the list.
  4. Decide whether to keep Send InitiateCheckout when the checkout button is clicked checked. It is on by default.
  5. Click Add. The pixel shows up in the list as Active.

From then on your videos' player loads the pixel. If you later pause or remove the pixel, published videos stop sending to it, again without changing the embed.

Events the player sends

  • VslPlay: when the person actually starts watching, outside the muted autoplay preview.
  • VslView10, VslView25, VslView50, VslView75 and VslView90: when they reach 10, 25, 50, 75 and 90% of the real time watched. The math uses the video's real duration, not the progress bar.
  • VslView100: when the video ends.
  • InitiateCheckout: Meta's standard event, when the person clicks a link that leads to the checkout of the conversion linked to the video. It only fires if the option is checked on the pixel.

Each milestone is sent once per page load. Events carry video_id, video_title, video_duration and video_current_time, which you can use to build custom conversions and audiences in Events Manager.

The player does not send PageView: page views stay with the pixel you already have on the site. If your page already loads the Meta pixel, the player uses it and does not initialize the same ID twice. If it doesn't, the Meta library is only downloaded on the first event, after the first play.

For InitiateCheckout to work, the video needs a linked conversion. See Linked conversion and, if your checkout uses its own domain, Checkout on a custom domain.

How to check the events arrive

  1. Open your sales page in a private window and play the video with sound.
  2. In Meta Events Manager, open the pixel and use the test events area, or the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension.
  3. You should see VslPlay right after you press play and the VslView events as you keep watching.

If nothing shows up, check that the embed is the script one, that the pixel is Active in the list and that no ad blocker in the browser is blocking Meta.

Limits and caveats

  • Up to 5 pixels per account. The same ID can't be added twice.
  • Pausing keeps the pixel and stops sending. Removing deletes it from the list.
  • Events depend on the viewer's browser. Ad blockers and declined cookies reduce what reaches Meta, as with any pixel.
