Advanced parameter (RedTrack): when to use it

The advanced parameter lets you use a name outside the platform's list, like RedTrack's sub1 to sub20 slots. Here's when to use it and the rules.

Each platform's parameter list covers most cases. The advanced parameter is for when it doesn't, mostly in setups with a tracker between the ad and the checkout.

What it is

When you create a conversion, the Tracking parameter section shows the parameters the platform documents. The + Advanced parameter (RedTrack) option opens a field where you type another name. The conversion key then travels in that parameter. The general mechanism is in Tracking parameter.

When to use it

  • Your setup uses a tracker like RedTrack, which works with the sub1 to sub20 parameters.
  • Every parameter on the platform's list is already used by other tools.
  • Your platform sends the tracking value back in the sale notification under a name that isn't on the list.

If a parameter on the list is free, use it instead. It's the path the platform documents.

How to set it up

  1. In Account settings › Conversions, click New conversion and pick the platform.
  2. Under Tracking parameter, click + Advanced parameter (RedTrack).
  3. Type the parameter name, for example sub1. If you leave it empty, VSL Max uses sub1.
  4. Continue with the conversion name and the webhook, as with any conversion.

Naming rules

  • Up to 60 characters.
  • Letters, numbers, _, and -.
  • It may end with one pair of brackets, like metadata[src]. No spaces or other symbols.

How the sale is read

When the sale notification arrives, VSL Max looks for that parameter's value in the order data: in a field with that name or inside a URL the platform sends back. The key is also recognized by its format. If the platform or tracker doesn't send the value back anywhere in the notification, the sale arrives without tracking and the conversion stays Under review.

Before sending traffic to the VSL, make a test purchase from the link on the page and check that the conversion becomes Validated.

Example with a tracker

Say your tracker already uses sub1 for something else in the checkout link. In that case, type sub2 as the advanced parameter. The player writes the key into sub2 on click, and your platform or tracker needs to send that value back in the sale notification.

Watch out for

  • The player doesn't write the key into a parameter that already has a value in the link. Make sure the tracker doesn't fill that same parameter.
  • The advanced parameter doesn't change attribution for platforms without attribution: reading their notification isn't ready yet.
