Tracking parameter: what it is and which to pick

The tracking parameter is how the conversion key travels from the player to the checkout. Here's how it ties the sale to the video and which one to pick.

Without the tracking parameter the sale still arrives, but VSL Max can't tell which video made it. Picking this field well is what puts revenue on the right video.

What it is

When someone clicks to buy, the VSL Max player writes a key into the checkout link. That key identifies the visitor, the video, and the second of the video where they clicked. The tracking parameter is the name of the URL field the key goes into, for example src in ?src=....

Your payment platform stores that field with the order and sends it back in the sale notification (the webhook). That is how VSL Max knows which video made the sale.

How it works, step by step

  1. You create the conversion by picking the platform and the parameter, and link the conversion to the video.
  2. The viewer clicks a buy link or button on the page where the player is.
  3. If the link points to a checkout domain, the player adds the key in the chosen parameter.
  4. The purchase is approved and the platform calls the webhook URL with the order data, including the parameter.
  5. VSL Max reads the key, attributes the sale to the video, and the conversion becomes Validated.

Where to pick it

In Account settings › Conversions › New conversion, pick the platform. The Tracking parameter section shows the parameters the platform documents. Click one and continue with the conversion name and the webhook.

Which one to pick

Pick a parameter that no other tool in your setup uses. If you run a UTM or tracking script that already writes to src, pick sck or, on Hotmart, xcod.

Parameters offered today for each platform:

  • Hotmart: src, sck, or xcod.
  • Kiwify, Hubla, Digital Manager Guru, Ticto, Kirvano: src or sck.
  • Monetizze, Braip, PerfectPay: src.
  • Cakto: sck. Cakto accepts src in the URL but doesn't send it back in the webhook.
  • Eduzz: trk, trk2, or trk3.
  • Yampi: metadata[src] or metadata[sck]. The brackets are part of the name: without them Yampi doesn't store the tracking value.
  • Lastlink: vtid, src, or sck.
  • Greenn: the platform doesn't document a parameter. Pick a name your traffic sources don't use.
  • Zapier, Make, and n8n: src or sck.

If none of them works, use your own name with the advanced parameter.

Clashes with other tools

If the link already arrives with a value in the chosen parameter, the player doesn't overwrite it with the key. And if another script on the page rewrites the parameter after the click, the key is lost. Either way, the sale arrives without tracking.

The conversion is Under review

The Under review status with the "Sale received, but without tracking" notice means the sale arrived without the parameter. The usual causes:

  • The buy link doesn't go through the player: it's on another page, in an email, or was typed in directly.
  • The checkout uses a domain the player doesn't know. See checkout on your own domain.
  • Another tool uses the same parameter.
  • The platform doesn't attribute sales per video yet. See platforms without attribution.
